Introduction

Foreword

Future transmission and distribution system will be changed dramatically due to the environmental problem, energy resource problem, and deregulation of power industry.

Although large scale generation and bulk long distance transmission have been played main role in conventional power systems, distributed generations using new energy resources such as photovoltaic cells, wind turbines, natural gas co-generations, fuel cells and so on will be introduced in power systems more and more.

In the new power systems, conventional large scale power systems and distributed generations should work together keeping harmony. In such circumstances, power electronics will play the most important role, by which electrical power can be changed freely and quickly.

We can generate, transform, control, and store electric power easily by using power electronics technology together with energy conversion devices such as solar cells, small scale wind turbines and hydroelectric power generators and so on, and energy storage devices such as secondary batteries, electric double layer capacitors, and superconducting magnets and so on.

Power technology becomes to be closer to people, although it has been handled by specific people. "Ubiquitous power" will become true in the near future. Our laboratory members are working for developing basic technology for future power systems considering environmental problem and energy resource problem under the slogan of “Power Electronics and Electrical Energy”.
